Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced on Wednesday that the Board received a record-breaking total bid of Rs 4,669.99 crore for the franchises during the auction process for its first Women's T20 league. The Women's Premier League, or WPL, will serve as the competition's official moniker.

"Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men's IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs 4,669.99 cr in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women's cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity," he tweeted.

It should be mentioned that Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd purchased the Mumbai franchise for Rs 912.99 crore, while Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd purchased the Ahmedabad licence for Rs 1,289 crore.

For a total of Rs 901 crore, Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd acquired the Bengaluru franchise; for a total of Rs 810 crore, JSW GMR Cricket Pvt Ltd acquired the Delhi franchise; and for a total of Rs 757 crore, Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd acquired the Lucknow franchise.

Prior to this, it was revealed that Viacom18 had been awarded the media rights of the upcoming Women's Indian Premier League for a five-year term (2023-27).

With the company's commitment, each match will cost about Rs 7.09 crore, or Rs 951. The first three editions will have 22 matches, while the following two will feature 34. For the men's IPL, Viacom18 already has the internet rights.
