A.K. Tyagi, Executive Director of the country's largest snack-maker, Haldiram Snacks, claims that traditional Indian namkeens are healthier than most Western counterparts. "All our namkeens are made out of moong dal, chana dal or besan. They are high in protein and gluten-free too," he says. Though the snack-maker is aggressively expanding its health food portfolio, Tyagi believes the market for traditional snacks will always be more prominent. Health foods may grow faster on a lower base. "India has a problem of malnutrition too, so, there will be a large set of consumers who would want to consume fried food," he further explains.
Haldiram's, famous for selling namkeens and other savory and sweet snacks, capitalizes on heightened consumer interest in health and nutrition foods that climaxed as the pandemic hit the country last year.
